HELP!-12 gal jbj filters

Hi, I'm new to reef keeping and have a jbj 12 gallon deluxe for my first tank (I've got a 44 gallon fish only, too). I put a maxi jet 900 in the third chamber in the back for increased water flow, but it seems to be pumping out water faster than it is going back into the filter chambers and will begin shooting out air bubbles into my tank. I was using the stock spongy filters in the first chamber and had removed the ceramic and bio balls in the second and added 2 bags of activated carbon. Has anyone else had any problems along these lines? Any thoughts on how to fix it? How should I be servicing those first 'spongy' filters? Do you have to take them out periodically and replace or rinse them? If so, how do you take them out without dripping a ton of crap back into your tank? I've removed 2 of the 3 filters for now in an attempt to help the powerhead situation until I can figure out a better solution. Any help would be appreciated!
