Just keep this rule of economics in mind: needs and wants are two different things. I honestly don't know that I would add any hermits to an 8-gallon tank, and would only add snails based on need. The problem is cyclical: You add a cuc, they eat everything, die, have other problems, fix them, get more algae, buy more cuc, they eat everything, die... As far as the hermits go, if they run out of food, they'll eat the snails, and then take over the shells.

I would suggest scarlet reef hermits . Add a few extra shells to the tank and get snails about half the size of the crabs so they'll be less be tempted to attack the snail. I've never seen a scarlet attack a snail but most every one I've had came with a cerinth shell.
