First Nano Tank - Suggestions Please.

I am thinking about investing in a reef tank and it is my first venture into the saltwater world. Previously I had cichlids. So I am not completely new to mainting fish tanks.

Originaly I was think of getting a Tru Vu 55g Hex Acrylic. But after some research, I think I am going to go with the Tru Vu 25g Nano.

My questions are as follows:

What type of light fixture should I purchase?

What type of substrate should I used? Should I use a mix of lighter and heavier?

How much live rock should I purchase for 25g?

Do I need more than a protein skimmer, heater, and Reverse Osmosis/Deionization System?

Should I use Reverse Osmosis/Deionization System?

What type of lighting should I use?

What type of salt crystals should I use?

Any other input would be greatly appreciated.

To Answer Some questions

The Tank i dont know about personally but i say go for it

For lighting it all depends on what you would like to keep in your tank. So softies Id go with PC lighting. Its fairly inexpensive in comparison to others but still good. For more light demanding coral like SPS or some lps i would go with either a 70w or 175w Metal Halide System,.

When asking anything about substrate here you will get a lot of different answers. SOme say a deep sand bed, others say a thin one, and alot say none at all. I would say just do a shallow sand bed of a fine substrate. You will get good results and later on it wont be very hard to switch to bb (bare bottem) if you want to.

For Liverock it really depends on how much you want. Get as much as you need to make a really nice aquascape that you can place coral on and is attractive. Its good to keep it spaced off the glass enoulf that you can get something in there to clean the glass without moving around the LR.

You NEED a filter, Heater/chiller (depends on what the temp is), Power Head, Water Testing Equipment. You might WANT a Protein Skimmer, RODI unit, Sump/Refugium.

For Salt i would use Instant Ocean Brand. Ive used it from the start with no problems.

As far as advice id say take you time. Go slow. The only thing rushing gets you is trouble down the road. Do lots of reading/research on the forums and books and people just to get a good feel. I myself switched from ciclids and personally would never go back. And the number one Rule is HAVE FUN. If you have anymore questions or anything feel free to PM me. Any one else wanna point out whatever i may have missed...

What type of substrate should I used? Should I use a mix of lighter and heavier?-------Carib sea Aragonite special grade....20# is more than enough

How much live rock should I purchase for 25g? ------start w/ ~30#, get some more if you want to fill it in more later

Do I need more than a protein skimmer, heater, and Reverse Osmosis/Deionization System? ------ a power head for some extra flow and thermometer, refractometer, slifert test kits. Get a good skimmer like Aqua C or Coralife

Should I use Reverse Osmosis/Deionization System? -----Yes

What type of salt crystals should I use? -----I/O great and cheap!

Any other input would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TRT! Have you looked at the 24 gallon aquapod? I come's in a mh version tho I have the power compact one myself. I wish I had got the mh but it wasn't out when I got my 24. I love this tank and is very simple to care for. I do not have a skimmer on it and has been no trouble at all. I keep some lps and softies in it. Just a suggestion.

Welcome to TRT!

All you need for a reef is Live Rock and a protein skimmer. Definitely don't use the under gravel filter. Wet dry filters are not really good in a reef either most people empty them out and just use it as a sump

Basically just pull all the Bio balls out!

you will want to have the tube from the overflow moved down into the sump or else you will have a lot of splashing snce the water will be falling a long ways w/o the bio balls there now!
