Coral Banded Shrimp Mean???

I have a 12g nano with a marron clown, rose anenome, long tentecal anenomy, featherduster, brain looking thingie, Green Star Polyps and some new aditions. Today at the LFS i bought a hawkfish and a coral banded shrimp. The problem is that whenever the fish swim by the shrimp he makes passes and swats at them. Im thinking that one day he`ll get lucky and stick one in the gut. Is this regular Coral Banded shrimp activity. Docters Foster and Smith label them as peacful(a smily face). Should i trade him in for a different one or is he just hungry. Or did i make a huge mistake and should return him for a pepermint shrimp. I thought they would get along. I need feed back soon so i know if i should return him. Thanks

mine was agressive acting for a while until he established his territory. He would chase fish and such but never truly grab one.I'd say wait him out or start with a really small one. Mine will still protect his area of the tank but not to the extent of actually harming another in the tank.

Coral banded's are peaceful when placed in tanks with large fish and typically FO tanks. They are not suitable for small tanks with small fish. Here's some insight: they will eat anything they can catch! They will tear any other species of shrimp limb-for-limb and they will go after your cleaning crew. I would strongly recommend trading him in for a Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, as they are not only very peaceful, but they provide an invaluable service for your tank and fish. They eat microbes that cause Ich and will keep your tank more healthy.

Hope this helps.

That's interesting I've had several and know many other with coral banded shripm and have never heard of or seen them catch anything they can or rip other shrimp limb for limb. My pepermints and cleanershrimp are doing just fine for 8 months now living with the coral banded. There are A great deal of doomsayers on these forums. Take them with a grain of salt

Well... like all creatures great and small, they all have their own personalities and are subject to their own devices, however, by far, the overwhelming "say-so" on coral banded's is that they are not to be kept with small fish or other shrimp. If you're having luck, then "excellent housekeeping", but nay-saying and saying-so is what a forum is all about.

I think he might be ok. When i feed the fish the extra food goes to the bottem where he eats it. He really likes the front of the tank. The only part of my clean up crew he is interested in is one of my snails. He deliberatly climbs up the back wall to nibble stuff off his shell. The problem is there isnt anything on his shell. Mabe its just because they are from the same tank. It helps that the guy at the LFS nocked one of his claws off because that makes it so he cant grab all that much.

Cool

I had a coral banded shrimp once and I'm pretty sure it was responsible behind the death of my emerald crabs. I also saw it chase after my fish, but my pseudochromis was far too fast for it to catch. I ended up moving it to a different non-reef tank.

No it wasnt his fault. He didnt do it on purpouse if thats what four getting at. While trying to catch it out of the tank it wasnt cooroperating to well. When he finaly got it in one of its claws fell off. Itll be back by the next moult. I dont have my fish to worry about anymore tho. He eats my GSPs on a regular basis. He has eaten about a fifth of them already. Does this mean hes hungry or are they just a snack to them?

Dang, I never had a problem with my mated pair of golden coral banded shrimp or my big honker coral banded lobster. (He was just kinda big, but sadly he passed away last year after a few years, the LFS was amazed that he lived as long as he did).
My goldens actually perform some cleaner duties every now and again.

I kept 2 in a 10 gal nano tank (mated pair) along with a trio of red headed gobies. If you can imagine, due to the rock I had at the time, I basically had two reef mountains and a bare space in the middle. The gobies played on their side and the shrimp on their side. When I moved, I put the two into a larger display, (the 10 was moved into a 20 with clowns and red headed gobies) a 75 gal. I have seen the female cleaning the sides of my Naso tang. Sadly the male ended up shredded. I don't know who did it, but my LFS suspects it was the female, or my pistol shrimp. The lone female still pops up from time to time but due to the amount of rock in my 75, it hides very well until feeding time. I have never had them attack a fish. I have seen them pop a fish that got in his/her personal space but that is aobut it. On another note, it did get along with the Hi-fin banded goby for a little while. That goby will pair up with anything. He is paired with the peppermints in my tank currently. The pistol, the coral banded seems to pop him.

While we are dealing in generalities, large Coral Banded shrimp. are often pugnacious and mean, then again anything that is not target fed and left to scavenge can develop bad habits
Hawkfish as a rule prey on shrimp so caution is advised when keeping them together
