can i get some helpful ideas for my jbj 12 nano?
Hello everybody - im new the the forums (new to the hobby too^^)
I recently set up a 12gal nanocube -- I've read the posts in here about removing the ceramic rings/ bio-balls. Anyone have any creative ideas for the rear chambers?

Skimmer! (the live rock and sand do your flitering... you just have to provide water circulation) Skimmer! Skimmer! Skimmer!

You will need to mod the hood of the jbj to add a skimmer.
A skimmer isn't necessary in any system IMO. I have on on my 90 gallon because it is stocked with fish. If you do a 2 gallon water change (only takes 10 minutes) every week a skimmer isn't necessary. I ran a 55 gallon with 5 fish and 60lbs of live rock for 2 years without a skimmer and no deaths!
The cool thing about the jbj is its an all in one system that is supposed to be self contained and its supposed to look very clean (ie no equipment hanging off, or in tanke etc)...when you cut open the back, light will leak and a big ol nasty skimmer will be in the back. My wife just gave me mine for christmas and Thursday I am starting on a DIY stand for it. The only thing I might do to mod mine is change the pump and add one to the system on a walmart timer that turns it on for 15 mintues and off for 15. Corals grow better with a change in water flow.

I change 1 gallon every other week. Your live rock will do much more then you think. It is more then enogh filtration for a small tank....Anthony

Merry Christmas to all!
I have a skimmer on my 11 Ga and it works nicely... necessary it is not, but helpful it certainly is. It is, however, something else to clean and maintain. I think it is worth it.

You could do the skimmer mod to it. it wouldnt be as good as a skimmer but you wouldnt have to cut up the hood.

For Christmas the wife got me one of the new 24 gallon nano cubes. I was curious if anyone has played with one yet and could recommend a good skimmer to place inside the filter. I owuld like to do a skimmer where I do not have to mod the top.

theres alot of room in those. I have heard rumors that a remora could fit in one. You might wanna search some sites about that tho.

Hello,
I'm a newbie here and I've been reading some of the threads, and I need alittle help...I received a 12g Nano Cube for Xmas and decided to go ahead and take a crack at the live reef (10-12#argonite, 15-20# live rock (live rock rubble in the filter media compartment, some corals, a cleaing crew and a few 1 in fish...all in that order basically). Right now the tank is setup, no filter media, empty (no, substrate, live rock, etc...just saltwater and it's circulating) temp is 78deg, sg 1.023 (finally...had a hell of a time getting it there, even mixing to the directions, I had to add about another .25# to get it to 1.023)...right now my ph is around 7.93 using a calibrated (cal @ 7.0) hanna meter...haven't tried the ph test kit (drops) yet. I've tried adding baking soda to raise the ph, but the pH won't budge...was hoping to at least add the live rock, rubble and argonite by now, but the low pH has me concerned and befuddled and I don't wanna screw up 15-20# of live rock...going to try a solution of 100% sodium carbonate to see if that does the trick.
Main question for me here is, after the proper level has been reached (8.2-8.3) will it be ok to add the live rock, rubble and argonite? I plan on letting the rock cure for a month and then add corals and stock...but kinda stuck at this point.
Anyone have any ideas?
p.s. had a 55g fish/invert tank about a decade ago (wet/dry, skimmer, chambers, etc....was very successful until we had to bomb the house for fleas...did what I could, but everything crashed about a month later...even with all of the precautions.
Thanks!

I bet the ph will go up once you add the substrate and rock. That is why it is low
