Just because "you've done it" doesn't mean that they're happy and thriving. The fact that they died certainly implies that they were not thriving.

Nano tanks are only good for small fish, and at that a small bio load. The other thing you need to consider is swimming room, in a small tank there isn't goign to be much, so you need fish that don't require that kinda room or don't swim much at all anyways. Heres a good list to start with.

Peyton welcome to TRT!!!!

If I can give you some advice it would be chose 3 SMALL fish - like a goby a blenny and an small active swimmer like a clown fish.

add them from least aggressive to most aggressive one a month until you have the 3 you desire....

and a blue tang - just skip all tangs not even for a little bit, not even if they are tiny - just don't so it.

The smallest aquariums that accommodate even the smallest of the Tang species is I believe a 75 and even at that those can grow up to 6-8 inches. A 29 just does not supply the needed swimming room for a Tang.

I'm new so I don't have much to lend to the conversation...except when I looked at the list provided by YLChick...many of those are what I've had with a great deal of success. One warning is that some of the gobies that also sift sand will starve in a small tank. It is terrible to watch. I have a 24g AquaPod.

Good point about the sand sifting gobies. Unless you have a well established tank, over a year old, they usually cannot find enough to eat in the sand bed. If you do not see them readily eating prepared or frozen foods at the LFS it may be best not to buy that specimen. The other thing is there is not a whole lot of floor space in a tank like that for sand dwelling fish such as jawfish either.
