Question

5 Gallon Nano Questions?

My little sister has a 5 gallon nano set up. She's got about an inch of Fuji Pink sand, the light and filter are custom that goes with the tank, along with a heater. She's got three Fuji live rock pieces, some small kelp or algae plant growing and some other stuff she was wondering about.

When she got one rock it had a light or mint green colored balls on it. Eventually they changed to a lime green color, then a dark dark green and then to a purple and then again to red but now they are turning a white color. Some of them broke open, it doesn't look like there is anything in these egg shapped things.

Then again, on other rock she has, there are stringy green hairs that come off and up. It's an algae I'm sure, but it's taken over one rock, working on another and then down onto the sand and then up over the side of the tank.

She's only got two Yellowtail Blue Damselfish in there. I can take pictures with my cellphone if you need to see.

Have any idea what this stuff is?

She's had her tank running from the same day I did. Do you think a Blenny or some sort of algae eatting critter would be good in her tank since it's producing so much of this stuff? She says it gets bigger every day, and I've seen her scoop some of it out and it be back the next day!

Sorry the pics are too small I can't really see what you are asking about. I would not recommend more than 1 very small fish in a 5g tank

how are the water paramaters? Sounds just like buble algae and hair algae. where did you get the water from?? how long did the tank cycle before you added fish? what lighting, and filtration do you have?

Hmmm... her tank has been running since mine has so 03/03/06 is when she started it. She put in her Damselfish on... 03/10/06. I don't have a clue about anything else besides the fact that her filter is a smaller version of my own which is a Cascade 200 Power Filter.

if your using tap water, thats probably why you have tons of hair algea. you need to use RO water. you can buy it at most LFS's, since buying a RO unit wouldn't be practical for a 5.5 If you only have the stock lights that came witht the tank, most corals will not get enough light to survive....possibly some shrooms, but not much more. I would keep it to only one fish for that small too. what media do you have in the filter?
