in general it takes 4-6 weeks to cycle a tank. you don't need damsels though. Fish food, a raw shrimp, or unscented ammonia will feed the bacterai to start the cycle. THe best way to tell if your tank is cycled is to test the water or take it to your LFS to be tested. the crabs may or may not survive depending on what they are. Crabs are generally pretty tolerant of poor water conditions. Don't do any water changes until there is no ammonia or nitrite in your water but substantial nitrate.
