This is possible. Do you plan to put the sump above or below the display? I wanted to do the same thing with my 20L, but was going to use a 10 or 15g for sump. I ended up just getting a 12" refuge for the back.

You may need to check online with flow for whatever pump you are going to use. I wish I could say more but my experience has been trial and error when it comes to pumps.

I put different types of algae in my system with about 3 inches of fine sand and a few pieces of rock. I light my 12" with a 13 watt pc bulb. It is suppose to take all the nutrients out of the water and keep you from having algae spikes in tank. If you run your lights on oposite times it is suppose to take care of the ph curve. I believe it also to be a good place to raise little critters that your fish can eat. The little guys reproduce in the refuge and eventually find there way out from the return side of the system.

I use a 20 gal high tank as a fuge for my 10 gal nano tank. I am using a 500 gpd internal pump in the fuge (cordoined off).
