UPDATE: 1 Month Old 12g Nano Cube

Hi all, just wanted to introduce our cube to the forum. We bought a nano cube about a month ago and initially introduced 2 percula clown fish, live rock from fiji and sand. The clowns adapted great.. hardly any stress.

We completed our first water change on saturday, approx 50% (added 4 gallons of fresh ocean salt water) The hubby got desperate and bought a whole bunch of new additions:

Sun Coral, Bubble Coral, Pumping Xenia, Open Brain Coral, Red Chili/Cactus Coral, a reef safe brittle star, Yellow Watchman Goby, Blood Fire Shrimp...

We didnt follow the advice of having patience.. couldn't help ourselves...

Anyhow everything seems to be doing ok. We have yet to purchase testing kits... but are currently adding cycle to the tank once a week, iodine once a week, calcium 2 x a week and plankton daily....

As we are beginners... we're hoping things will go ok but will def. be looking for you guys on advice as we proceed... we'll be taking beginning pics soon to update ya'll.(unless we get a crash.. then we'll prob disappear into deep depression)...

but awesome site... look forward to getting to know ya'll and learning all about our nano reef!

Any advice or tips is well appreciated!

Welcome to TRT! The folks on here are amazing, they have helped me tremendously with my tank. That being said, I have some friendly advice that I'm sure others will echo. First off, get some quality test kits ASAP. Especially in a small tank like ours, the parameters can go south rather quickly and it is imperative to act on these ASAP. Also, along the lines of the test kits, I wouldn't suggest adding any additives until you have a test kit for that particular additive to give you an idea of what you already have in the tank. Especially the iodine, you may be raising the iodine level to very dangerous levels. Again, this is just FRIENDLY advice, please don't take this as a chastising! I too, added livestock to my tank much sooner than was recommended and it is flourishing. Best of luck to you, it's a great hobby, ain't it?

Some will say that it is....I think you'll be fine as long as you stick to a weekly water change. You have almost exactly what I have in my tank (fish/invert-wise). I only have 1 perc, though. I also have the yellow watchman goby and fire shrimp. How much live rock and sand do you have in there? Those are very important for filtration and the more of each will help with your bioload. Also, are you using any mechanical filtration?

thanks guys! we're purchasing test kits this week, any suggestions or preferences?.. and all feedback is great.. will not consider it chastising Also the only filtration we are using is what comes with the cube. as for the pounds of LR? I'd have to ask Paul as he's the one who set up the tank... im more of a spectator (and critic lol)...

Kelli/JCox do you have pics of your nano? K' whatcha got in yours?

We have about 12Lbs of live rock and it came with quite alot of things living inside of it, as for the sand about 1 bag how ecer much comes in a bag but its ample enough for sure and provides for a sandy bottom. As for the Filtration well its all in one not sure if its mechanical but its 3 compartments with no skimmer. The intake and the Filter, next chamber with the Carbon Bag and third with the bio Balls very good lighting and good current as well as the new Nano Cubes comming with the black LED night light which makes everything look pretty when the light goes off. Thanks for your advice my Fish store didnt recomend buying our own test kit seeing as how they are 2 minutes from our house and I bring my water to them weekly but if you say its a good idea then maybe we will look into it. He checked my water today its perfect salinity is a little high but thats it. Anyway thanks again and look for more pics as the tank grown a d flourishes. ( Knock on Wood )

I have always wondered, can you florida residents just go to the beach and fill up buckets of water, and use this for your water changes? It seems it would be a lot cheaper than buying salt mix.

If so, couldnt you also get your own Live rock and sand?

NanoKube, there's a pic of my 10 gal in the thread link below, about 3/4 way down the page. It's changed a small bit since that pic. I had to get rid of my bigger toadstool leather, it was outgrowing the tank. A little rearranging and such. I'll post an updated pic tomorrow.

As for test kits, I use a combination of FasTest and Salifert test kits. The Salifert have a good reputation and I am pretty happy with the FasTest. There are other good ones out there, opinions vary greatly on these. I've heard good things about SeaChem and LaMotte, also. Anything is better than nothing! Do a search on the forum for test kits to get an idea of what other folks like.

Nice pics of your tanks guys, Listen the Sun Coral pics mine has been in the tank for 3 days now no flowering and im giving it pytoplankton during the day to get it to flower and no luck so far any sugestions its in a small cave with lil light and decent water flow it grows and stretches but no flowers. As for the sand and rock and water I get my water from the store 50 cents a gallon not sure if the sand is good for tanks or the water i'll ask the rock definatly is though. My GF is having a BF so I gotta run thanks for the replies and looking forward to your comments.

question about pumping xenia mine looked shrivled up and not to healthy some of them look fine but they were once flourishing and now some look green balled up skinny and sick I actually found the fingers of one of them floating around the tank is there something wrong or is this normal behavior or should I bring them back to my fish store and get new ones ?? Any info would be helpful.
