Torn Byssal Foot/Gland???

Hi all. I just bought two Croceas the night before last and placed them on a couple rocks on the sandbed. Last night, both had jumped from their rocks to the sandbed, so before I went to sleep, I put them both back where they were.

This morning, one was still there and the other had jumped again. The one that jumped again looks like he tore a good part of his byssal gland/foot and it was laying next to him on the sand. I took a couple pics to show what I mean. From what I have read, it's pretty fatal when the clams tear their foot/gland, b/c they can never re-attach anywhere and slowly whither away.

Is this the same situation, or is this just a small piece or what?

I am going to put him back on the rock and build up alittle rubble pile around him to help him stay put, but I would like to know what impact this tear will have on the clam.

Thanks for the help.

I have had a clam with a slightly torn foot survive.........so not sure about that one......i hae also heard that it is a really bad thing

I sould suggest that if they keep jumping from the rocks....you should let him be on the sand at least for a while until he gets used to your tank. If he keeps jumping it means he doesnt like where you are putting him.

They can loose the byassal threads without issue,.. my maxima has done that from time to time when angry with placement, drop the threads and jump. The byassal glad is inside the clam and it's what makes the threads that attach it to the rock, if you pull on the clam and it doesn't want to let go then it will tear the gland inside.

Since the clam did this himself, you should be fine.

I see the gland sitting there, reports will tell you its fatal, but I have had different clams loose them and they have regrown, just make sure it gets good light and time will tell.
