tang and clam

the reason i started a saltwater tank was because i wanted to get a clam. but now i may have screwed up by getting a tomini tang. has anyone else had any luck with tangs not nipping at clam mantles? i've heard a lot of horror stories(AFTER i got the tang, course). thanks

I had never heard of tangs nipping clams either, unitl my buddies yellow tang went on a rampage and tore up his derassa. I now have this derassa for safe keeping and it's on the road to recovery. Unfortanitally it's not exactally in a safe place because my sailfin has aquired a taste for an occasional clam entree as well

It only seems to like Derassa's though. My Gigas and my Maxima have been so far uneffected. It's a good thing too because one of my Maxima clams would be about 1 bite for that huge sailfin.

Tangs are "considered" reef safe but there is always exception. My Sailfin tang was a model citizen for 4+ years and one day he went bizerk!!! He killed two of my open brains, one nice looking scolymia and started chewing on my neon green (Nepthea) sp? leather. He also killed my two purple tangs and Red sea Naso ( show piece size).

Have lots of clams and 3 tangs, never had a problem. Once they nip though, your done, I had a copperband that nipped on them, he was evicted.

thanks, working on getting a decent camera, tangs just like any fish can have their own personality, there is never a guarantee. Lots of people have trouble when they get older with them becoming zoanthid nippers as well.

Tommini Tangs are bristle tooth tangs like Koles or chevrons I've never heard of them nipping at corals. I don't have clams but my tommini hasn't bothered any corals and I do have a few brains and other "fleshy" LPS
