T5ho clams......
im thinking about trying a clam in the 90g in about 8-10 months once the tank has been setup that long.....
but wondering what if any clams are ok under T5? im gona have NOVA EXTREME 6x54 pro T5's on my 90g tank.....
i read that derasa clams are MODERATE lighting clams.....would they work in there?
or is there any clams that would work??
thanks

I have had my derasa under the same light fixture running only 2 daylight bulbs and the rest actinic for several months now. It has grown about half an inch since I got it. BTW this is in a 55 which is only 4 inches shorter than the standard 90gal. Also, I keep the clam on the sand. I would think that a crocea or maxima would be ok under all 3 daylight bulbs and set high up on the rocks. The Nova Ext. Pro is a nice fixture imo.

You'll be fine with a clam under that unit. If you end up with a maxima or crocea, I'd stick it high in the rock work, but a derasa, squamosa, or gigas would be fine on the sand. Good luck!

ok....thanks guys.....maybe by thanksgiving the new system will be stable enuff for one......but if im not impressed with it itll have to wait alil bit longer....
i like the maxima and crocea clams but i dont want to risk a clam that requires high lighting in there....unless i have someone on standby with a mh setup in case the clam doesnt take....

You should be fine, IMO the power of T5HO's is really under-rated in this hobby.
I can grow montipora's and LPS just above my sandbed in a 26" deep tank under my 4x52w T5's, a clam should be fine as well.

I agree with neuticle that t-5 lighing is really under-rated. That being said, individual reflectors are a must to be competitive with MH. And you cannot expect that t-5 will compare to 400w and greater MH, but the majority of us don't need that anyway. Just my 2Cents.

ya i know they cant compete with the high power mh setups....and im one of the ones that dont need that much light...im not gona be getting into the high dollar, high requirement LPS and SPS stuff......
the most im gona keep is my monti's(which are doing great under my 260w pc), blastos, my bi-color frogspawn, hammer and all my zoa's and paly's, gsp,mgsp,kenya,xenia.....
i like the acans and acropora's and and all but right now im nt wanting to get into all them.....maybe later in a bigger tank but for now my 90 is gona be a mixed reef with mainly softies and a few sps/lps corals....
ive been reading GREAT things about these NE t5 pro setups like what im getting and i cant wait for it to get here and LIGHT UP MY WORLD!!!

I agree that these lights are underrated. I have a 7xT5 Constellation fixture which I finally learned to run as a 5x fixture since stuff seemed to be getting over-blasted. Everything, including several SPS and a Maxima clam, seems to be happier with the lighting dialed back a bit. I still have a few Acro frags sitting on the (bare) bottom and they seem to be thriving.

i have the 72" constellation which has 14 x 39 watt bulbs. i have all sorts of clams on the bottom. along w/ tons of high end acropora and monties @ varying levels. i would put my T5 light up against 250 or even 400 watt mh fixtures par for par.

I kept a maxxima with the exact same light (48" Nova Extreme) and it grew very well. I had it in on the top of the rockwork in a 45 tall.
