Red Clam

My LFS has had a large ~6" clam with a maroon mantle in it's misc. tanks for about 6 mo. It has a heavily ribbed shell and is thriving under two T5HO bulbs. It's an odd looking clam, but large and healthy, and can be had for the bargain price of $39.99. (awesome)

Should I give clamming a try?

Funny you should ask,

I got down there, and they had finally realized it wasn't a misc. frag, and put it in the coral tanks under halides. The price went from $40 to $90 in a matter of 10 feet.

I went back last week, under the halides it looks like a regular grade B or C crocea (sp?) clam, nothing special. It blued up a lot more, now the red flesh looks like brown with metallic blue spotting, would have been cool for $40, not so much for $90 though.

Sometimes it pays to be a little quicker on the draw. Don't feel bad as I have had many situations where I walked out of the LFS contemplating buying something only to go back in as little as an hour later and have it be gone.

THe lesson here is if you have the impulse to buy ANYTHING for your tank you should do it immediately!

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

That may actually be the only part of the hobby where it pays to do something fast.

I do that a lot... I will go into my LFS just to see what's new and grap a new frag that every one else wanted just because I was quicker on the draw, that's how I got my ORA Red Planet Acropora and ORA Oregon Tortuosa Acropora. Both the Red Planet and Oregon were only in the water for 2 hours and then went home with me. I'm now hoping I can get a ORA Purple Plasma the same way. The LFS that's on my way home just started getting corals from ORA a little over a month ago so far I've been lucky to get the frags that I've wanted... well see if I can snag that Purple Plasma.

It was red, it was a crocea that had lost most of it's fluorescent algae, it's blue now.
