I'm hardly an expert, but:

I've dealt with pinched mantle on both my Maximas,... the biggest trick is carefull not to pull up on the clam, you can tear the byassal gland and that is normally fatal.

How I removed them from the rock, is slide a razor blade under the clam right along the rock to cut the Byassal threads, these will grow back. Once the threads are cut the clam will fall right off the rock and you can do your FWD.

Fresh water dips are the only effective treatment I've found thus far for Pinched mantle,.. It has worked for me a few times, though I have had to do more than one in the case of my large maxima to clear up the situation.

HTH,
Whiskey

how long has the clam been like that? it looks pretty far along and IME when there in that condition that usually dont make it through the FWD. its kind of a catch 22 at this point. either do nothing and watch it die or possibly kill it trying to help it

today is only day 2 maybe 3 of him not being fully open. I do not run Po4 removers or carbon on a regular basis. So if I just stretch him a little bit and try to slide a blade uner him I MIGHT get lucky and not hurt him any more BUT if I just leave him I will lose him for sure. Another clam is on the bottom of the tank about a foot away and 10" lower in the tank. Is he safe from whatever causes this?

While doing housework before I get to spend time with my fish. (I am a Mr Mom and housework has to come first or I don't get to it) as I walked past my tank and a shadow hit my clam he did his normal "slamming shut" I assume this is a good sign that there is still some life left to him. I am going to try and slide a blade between him and the rock while crossing my fingers and do the dip
