New clam

I picked up a new maxxima clam about two weeks ago. Good sized I would say about six inches long. It has been opening up fully with the mantle extending well beyond the shell. I placed it on a rock to try and get it to attach so I could move it around easier, the same that I did with my crocea.

Well apparently the new guy did not like the rock, I saw him moving himself off the rock and now he is on the substrate, fully extended and happy as can be. I am a little worried though because it left a bit of his byssal threading at the old rock and possibly part of the foot. Not sure because it was a small solid piece attached to the byssal. I went to get my camera and when I got back it was gone. Somebody decided it would be a good meal I guess.

Another think I have noticed is at the LFS the clam had a aquamarine ring around the edge of the edge of the mantle. I have not really seen it since I added him to my tank. Every now and then I can see a little bit of the aquamarine but no complete like it was at the LFS. I have MH with 2*250 watt 14k and 1*150 watt 20k. The bulbs are probably ready to be repalced so I am not sure if that would do it.

Any feedback or ideas is as usual appreciated! I will try and get a nice pic of him tonight to post for you since I am sure I will be harrassed for it anyways

I wouldn't worry too much about the byssal threads, when they move themselves they will usually leave quite a bit behind.

As for the coloration, clams will change with age and lighting along with other various factors.

I have a maxima that changed colors quite drastically over the few years I've had it.

Current coloration on the left, original on the right.
