nano clam?
I am new to the board and i was wondering if it would be ok if i used a small maxima in my 2 gallon reef? i have a sealife nano hang on filter and a power compact 10v light. it has around 1 lb of live rock and for now 3 damsels and 3 hermits white and black legs. i am going to get rid of the damsels when i start adding coarl and hopefully the clam thank you.

I would recommend against it. A 2 gallon tank would barely be enough room for the clam without any corals. Honestly, 2 gallons isn't big enough for much more than 2 or 3 very small coral colonies and no fish.

thank you, would a bigger tank like a 7 gallon work i like the nano reef setups. also i have fallen in love with clams. my tank has only been up for about 3 weeks so changing tanks would not be a problem. but i would like to keep my 2 gallon. thanks again.

The problem is a maxima clam is going to need metal halides to thrive. The lower light needing clams the derasa and squamosa would quickly outgrow a tank of 2g or 7g. The calcium is going to be super important in either set-up and nano reefs are a little hard to get totally stablized being the water volumn is low.
I would just advise against it. Clams also are not a good idea to start with til the system is atleast a year old too.

I wouldn't even think about clams until you spend the $ on halides.

IMO a fish only tank is no place for clams. I also agree with Joel, don't get a Tridacna until you have MHs.

I have a maxima under PC's (132 watts). It seems to be doing ok. If you look at mine and then look at some of the others who post on this board like Alien Domain's clams you will DEFINATELY see a difference in vibrance. Alien domain's clams are so colorful they're surreal. Mine is just a little dull in color compared to others. Although mine is not as bright i think it is doing well b/c it has been growing steadily ever since i got it.
I do, however, plan to put it in a bigger tank with Halides. Here's a before shot and i'll post an after shot as soon as i put it under the Halide light.

Good to hear that clams doing well, keep up the good work. When you get a bigger tank and you are ready for more clams, let me know and we can do a group order from Clams Direct.

I do agree with Casey about the MHs. I thought you were getting a MH for your tank or did you decide to get a bigger tank before going to MHs. Anyhow in the interim keep that maxima as close to the lights as possible and make sure you change your bulbs every four to six months.

Are you asking about MHs or changing your florescent bulbs every four to six months?
