FWIW, I have had a T. maxima 2 feet deep in my 180 with nothing but VHO's for almost 3 years. It has been very healthy the entire time and has grown about 4x's the size in that amount of time.

I do agree that they need lot's of light, and extremely stable water quality, but IME, MH's are not absolutely mandatory.

No argument there. Although mine looks pretty darn good under VHO's. Also, PC's are not enough light, IMO.

If you keep any maxima or crocea under florescent bulbs too long you are running the risk of generalized bleaching, I have even seen this happen in squamosas as well. Changing your bulbs sooner than later will help but in the long run I have seen few people keep maximas or croceas under florescent bulbs with success.

Alien, sorry i'm delayed in my responses i'm still tryin to figure out this whole message board thing. I initially was going to put a MH over my nano. I even went so far as ordering one and then sending it back b/c i was told that i would need a chiller and that without a chiller it could overheat my tank and kill everything. Well, i thought about it and decided to keep the PC's on my nano b/c everything is looking so nice. Now what i have decided to do is convert my 29 gallon FW tank into a reef and put a MH over it. (who wants FW anyway hee-hee) I think the temp would be easier to control with a bigger tank. I guess it's obvious i'm a rather indecisive person... but, i know what i want.

I will definately let you know when i order new clams. I want a Tear Drop so bad i can't even stand it. I know.... I know... i'll wait til i have my MH light. later, JB

Sprayin70,
I put 2 175s over my 55 and I think it cost me around $375.00 but this was for new equipment, you should check out the for sale section.
