some substrates will help in leaching calcium into the water. and also help your buffering capacity(alkalinity). so you may not need to add calcium as much as it calls for but again thats why we test for it.

I have oolitic sand and I only add calcium about 1 time every 2 weeks. My cal is steady at 450-460 and thats even a bit high for my taste. My alk I have a little trouble with but not too bad. I have a high bioload so its a little difficult to get it where I want it but, even still I avg about 3 meq/l (8 dkh)

i wont add any calcium for a while. I will do 15% water changes a week as I normally do but test for calcium every other day or so just be on the safe side.
