Moving clam from sand to rocks

I just read here that the crocea clam is at home in the rocks. My new crocea (located in the sand) gapes from time to time, so I am considering moving it to the rocks.

My question is what is the best way to get it out of the sand without injuring its foot?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

It's a bit unorthodox, but it worked.

No big secret. I just suggested to Chris to use a long wooden spoon. Push it down into the sand a couple of inches beside the clam and then slowly scoop/push across under the clam slowly loosening and lifting it as to not damage the byssal foot. Then just gently picking up the clam and placing onto the rock work wherever he wanted/thought was best.

im glad it worked for you, however doing that puts pressure on the byssal gland, and you risk ripping the threads from the gland causing infection.

there's nothing wrong with cutting the byssal threads as far away from the clam as you can. the threads are a glandular secretion kinda like your hair and nails. the clam wont feel a thing

I guess I didn't word it properly. The idea was to do it in a manner that the sand was loosened enough not to injure the gland or the threads.

Huh,.. I didn't see this.

I'm sure that worked very well since his threads were just burried in the sand, that's the way I would have done it too,.. if I had a wooden spoon that is.

However, had he been ancored to the glass beneith the sand a move like that could damage the byassal gland since you would be pulling on the threads as Chris&Barb mentioned. If this were the case then the best way to do it would be to cut the threads that attach to the glass. He can grow the threads back, but if the gland itself is damaged it almost always leads to infection and death.

I've had to cut my clams off their mounts a couple of times,.. it's always important not to pull, but to cleanly slice the threads making sure not to cut the gland. Clams can also drop their byassal threads and "Jump ship" if their unhappy.

Glad your clam is doing well!
