I would also allow them to attach to a small rock, then you can place them where you want.
It is not unheard of for a Maxima to take a bit to "settle in" and attach to a rock, during that time while cleaning themselfs they tend to knock themselfs off.
What I do is put small rocks around it in my desired location, that way it can't tip or fall off, I also place it in a bit of a gully to begin with. The clam seems happy with this arangement and usually quickly attaches.
