Maxima Clam Placement
I know the internet is loaded with Maxima clam placement questions, but I still am unsure. I recently had a crocea clam die on me (pinched mantle, never should have bought the specimen). Anyways, today I got a maxima and squamossa. I have a 46 gallon (20 inch depth) tank with nova extreme lights (6 x 39w T5 with individual reflectors). The maxima initially opened all the way up but is currently only showing a little bit of his mantle. I have him positioned in the sand right now with a small rock underneath him. Do you think he can live in the sand or should I move him up now. He is fairly small (2-2.5 inches). I will try and post pictures, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

maxima are high-light calms, I'd think you'll be better off moving it up in the rock work. The squamosa is fine in the sand.

Question: Clam placement?
Answer: Wherever they want to go.
I agree though, the Max is going to need to be in the middle to top of the tank. My squammie is very happy in the sand. Plus, at 16+ inches max size... rocks will not give it enough support. IMO.

May have too much flow on him. could end up detaching from his rock and start moving around. Not real good for a Max. They can and do, but there could be 'foot' damage.

I would move the maxima towards the top, they are light lovers, you could probably get away with it lower if you had halides but with a nova extreme you are going to want to move it up, even with individual reflectors. imho

Thanks everyone for the help. The maxima looks much better today. He has started to attach to the rock I put under him. Later today or tommorrow when he looks more attached I will move him up. Thanks again.

One other quick question. The lighting unit currently has 3 x 10k bulbs and 3 x 460 actnic. I have read online about people switching to 4 x 10k. Do you think this would be beneficial to the clam? Thanks.

Depends on size and color. I would pay that much for a great or unique looking 5" teardrop, a teardrop with lackluster color I would expect 6-7".

i still think maximas need halides. i'm sure a lot of people don't agree with me but i just don't think the bright colored clams thrive without them.
