This is a huge clam (18+ inches end to end) that a fellow local reefer has in her tank. It's beautiful!

(Sorry, Carrie ... I couldn't resist posting the pic.)

This is my new clam. Can anyone tell me what kind it is and should it be in the sand or on the rocks?

Thanks I'm trying to learn.

Gigas, I was having trouble getting pictures of those, very few people seemed to have them, I have one though, and I got some pics PM'ed to me.

I hope you have a big tank (Check my FAQ at the top of this fourm for max size )

The prefer the sand.

HTH,
Whiskey

Yep the Giant clam, that would be one huge tank, when the clam is 4 feet long, immagine how wide and tall it would be!

BTW, don't worry about that inhalent syphon, these clams always gape a little like that, for them it's not a bad thing, but excessive gaping is (You'll know excessive gaping if you ever see it.)

Progress of babies Tridacna maxima, under 72W PC and sunlight, well fed tank.
First - since Oct 16, the second - Nov 5. Were around 3/4", now - more than 1" (3 cm).
The first one at beginning:

The second one at arrival (the top one):

Nov 30, first, then second:

Both sunlit, Dec4:

Dec18, new growth (pardon red slime, correcting the problem):

So far are fairly resilient creatures, the first wandered a lot, until settled; the second is all time on the spot, choosen by the 1st.

Survived tank crash (some toxic creatures died), that killed sps, stars and cucumbers, Nov 24. Even started to grow faster. Dirty tank, red slime (could be caused by ESV plankton daily, plus dragonet's food), now with skimmer.
