Let there be enough light!

I have a 2 1/2" maxima that I love so much and I think I'm becoming a clam addict! (Hey Casey I'm joining the crowd ) I'm worried about lights though. I have a 120 gallon (60"x"18"x24"deep, I wish I had gotten a wider tank with less depth.) with 2 96watt 20,000 k actinic, 2 96 watt 20,000 k full spectrum, 2 175watt 20,000 k metal halides. It is a 3 inch sand bed ( I wish I had joined TRT sooner and I wouldn't have a dsb! Casey, your change from dsb to barebottom is inspiring me a little bit.) I really like having the clam on the sandbed. Is this enough light or not?

Cool glad to have ya in the club I think with a 24 in deep tank you really need the 250 watters or even 400 the 175s par is weak
at best,I have had better color with the 250 watters clams just love light and now that I have a bare bottom I have no more snail problems

Well shoot, I'm not sure that I can upgrade them. I thought that I had gotten 250s originally but it turns out I didn't . Can you simply buy 250s and put them in the place of 175s or will the ballast not be able to handle it. I have a built in hood from Marine Depot. Will the other full spectrums and actintics not help at all.?Should I move him up to halfway on the rocks? Glad to hear about the snail problem dissaperance although I'm slightly bummed that my system isn't ideal for clams, which I've grown to like a ton!

no you need a 250 watt ballast I would move the clams up some to get more light, the other lights will help a little but MHS are awesome I have tried them all.You can always upgrade the ballast later when you get some more $$$

Shoot, It might be a year or so till I can upgrade them, I'm kinda dissappointed. But thanks for the advice! Could Squamosa do okay under these conditions? What photoperiod are your metal halides on?

He seems to be opening fully! I'll try to post a pic. THere's some algae growing on the shell. Can Derbesia leach compounds to hurt him?
