they are all filter feeders, plankton will do the trick, I don't do spot feedings and I have a ton of hitch hiking clams in my tank that are still kicking

Fish poop and food remnants should be good. You could try phyto, but I always felt it was really messy for the tank.

They feed on the free floating particulate in the tank. I don't try to keep mine alive with any supplemental phyto feedings -- it tends to become one more thing that has to skimmed/filtered out. They seem to do quite well on their own.
