They actually have a "foot" which can come out of the bottom which can steer them into the right direction. Its more like a club lol.

We actually had a small crocea foot its way through the sand from one end of the 29 gal tank to the other.(in about sixty seconds!) At first we thought something had ahold of it and was dragging the clam through the sand.
Then I thought I might be drunk, but I dont drink.
Out of the hundreds of clams we get a year, this was the first clam to scoot itself so well. I think most clams are collected in a way which harms the foot.
cutting the gland at collection seems to weaken the clams ability to use it soon after importation .

I've never had mine move other than by "Squirting"/Clapping...then they usually tumble down. When they don't do that...that's another sign they're happy!

...as a clam...
In the wild, many of the clams found on reeftops actually bore their own hole into the rock over time by "clapping". This causes the shutes to "dig" at the soft aragonite enough to rub small amounts away. The foot helps the clam to pull down firmly enough to continue to dig it's hole into the rocky substrate. I place all my clams in holes in the rock, and have noticed that they keep the holes relatively clear of debris through their activity in the hole. When making a placement, it is much better to make the hole too big and allow the clam to grow into the hole rather than make it too tight to start with.
