Footless Clam, Evil Crabs, Prognosis?
Help, or perhaps it is too late. This morning I noticed that my crabs ate the foot off my clam. He is still opening, full mantles - but what is going to happen to him. Will he die? or can he regenerate his foot? Any help is appreciated.

The Crabs were sold to me as emerald, they have the hairy legs but are a bluish green shell. My clam still has part of his foot, I gave him a little wiggle last night but a large part of it is missing. Now what do I wait for and when it happens how do I end this clams life humanely.

I didn't see them do it or they would be gone already. The only other mobile inhabitants are blue leg hermits. I will cross my fingers and hope. I even fed the crabs that day. I am totally fried. Thank you for your responses.

Casey, do you think some direct feeding of DT's to the clam might help? or even cyclopeeze?

I have never had an emerald crab or a hermit bother a healthy clam. How long have you had the clam?Clams often expel their byssal when stressed. He may not like his location.

I have had my clam for 8 months. I fed him this morning to help him regain his strength. He has no colour loss and closes fast when you approach the tank. I haven't seen any body bothering him. I guess we will wait and see.

pajama sam-It sounds like he is healthy.I'm thinking something in his environment has changed-old lights, new lights, powerhead changed or moved, even a coral that is growing can change the direction of flow enough to irritate him.

Aha - yes we had some change, a shuffle and the addition of a new powerhead. I never thought of that. O.K. Thank you so much.
