Question

Feeding Phytoplankton

I have purchased a beautiful Crocea Clam that is about 3"-4". I have purchased some DT's phytoplankton, but I am not sure as to the best method to feed my clam and corals. Do I just inject into the tank, or do I inject near the clams or corals I want to feed?

Thanks for any help. Ken

I do have to agree that if you have a decent MH setup you do not nessicaraly need to feed phyto. But if you wish to have better growth, color and health then feeding phyto will help out in those areas.

Remember feeding phyto to the tank will lead to unwanted algaes also.

I agree with evrything said so far. If you have MH and the clam is positioned appropriately then you do not need to feed. Phyto can also increase nutrient load in tank leading to unwanted algae.

You have 2 options to feed if you still want to. Put the clam on a small rock that it can attach to and remove it from the tank and place in a small bowl. Put some DT's in the bowl to tint the water green and leave the clam in there for 20 minutes or so. The water should be much clearer when taking the clam out.

The other option is to feed the entire tank. Be careful not to overfeed. If you have a sump or refugium, shut off your return pump to keep the display isolated and then add DT's to the display. Allow 20-30 minutes for the corals to capture the phyto. Turn any return pumps back on.

Good luck with your new clam!

MH = 2X150
PC = 2X96 "actinic"

Right now I am leaving the MH on 6 hrs per day, and the PC on 7 HPD. I am slowly bring the light cycle back to 9 hrs per day.

This tank is 6 months old but was recently dismantled and moved to a different location. All substrate, rock, livestock and as much water as I could save was returned to the tank (90gal). the tank has been running 3 weeks since moving and eveything is doing great! Water chemistry has been right on target with the generally accepted parameters. I am fighting some hair algea, but it was there before I purchased this tank...bought the setup used (prior owner bought it and only had it about 5 months).

thank you for the advise. Ken

Phyto is okay but most folks just dont know how to use it, If your going the to use phyto the proper way is really to grow your own and have it on a constant VERY slow drip....the bottle stuff might as well say pollution on the bottole as dumping a large amount of food from a bottle once on twice a week will just have access nutrients feeing those nasty algaes. Most reefers dont use phyto because most reefers now a days are into fishless fuges and those do a good job at feeing your inverts to....
