derasa question

Got a derasa clam last week and placed in on a flat rock with some sand. About how long will it take for the clam to attach itself, or do derasas even send out byssal threads?

Derassa clams do put out byassal threads when there small,.. and loose them as they get larger, but really they never attach as strong as a maxima or Crosea does. I always simply place mine in the sand,... I don't worry about attaching them to anything, and they are plenty happy with that.

I have two derasas in my reef tank; both on rocks and they are attached. Removing them is not an option anymore. If they're happy, I believe they should almost automatically attach.

I have a crocea that is attached to a flat rock buried in the sand and a derasa that is placed on the sand bed with a clam shell buried down into the sand to stop the byssal threads from sinking to the glass bottom. I moved it once and yes there were threads down about 2 inches into the substrate

I agree with Wiskey, as some of the larger clams such as derasas, squamosas, and gigas get larger they lose their byssal threads and rely on weight to keep them in place. My last derasa sent out byssal threads (but it was in the sand) until the shell was about 4-5" in length. Once it reached this size I never saw them again.
