Sorry, I'm out of ideas. I thought that if a clam died that the shell would be open. if it's closed up and doesn't open freely, than he may still be alive. But like I said, I'm out of ideas.

Normally it's pretty obvious when they die. The shell will be wide open and the flesh will be very shrunken and deflated, sucked way back into the shell. There should be very little resistance if you try to open it up.

It sounds as if it may still be alive. Any recent pics?

Create a little basket out of rocks, where it couldn't possibly tip over, but still has unrestricted movement to open fully. Make sure there is very little water flow, slight movement in the mantle with no or very slight folding.

how do you filter your water? what kind of snails do you have? I place all my clams at the bottom of the tank to avoid them falling.

if you take the clam out of your tank and the smell almost makes you vomit it's dead. dead clams and dead acropora are the two most disgusting smells i know. short of that, does it react to shading?
