Question

Damaged Xenia?

My Yellow Tang must have a problem telling the difference between Macro and coral. Yesterday I decided to give Xenia another try. I got a thumb sized stalk from my LFS that was attached to a fist sized rock with all sorts of Macro and Halimeda plant on it also. Here's the problem, I think my Tang took a bite out of it. It has a small hole in the stalk and is very gray although it's still pumping slowly.

Question: Should I write it off or will it mend itself?

Consider it a blessing.

No, don't write it off. Xenia does great in my tank. Usually when Xenia extends and starts to form a hole..at least in my tank, it was the precursor to it's attaching to something near it. It is almost like it was forming new suction cups to get ready to make it's move. As for the coloring, coloring varies not only amond species, but also among it's "moods" Usually I noticed the greatest color difference between when it was filled with water, and when it expelled water from its tissue. Anywho..hope this helps.

I agree. It depends with the tank. If the xenias are happy you cannot kill them. In fact, I cut them with steak knives and take all the floating pieces and put them in the refugium; I actually believe the xenias are replacing my caulerpa if that's possible!
