Question

Crocea not opening up?

This is our first clam. We bought it about 2 weeks ago. It is in a 160 gal tank that is 32" tall with 3 400wt MH mounted about 7" off the top of the water. When we first got it I placed it on the sand to get used to our lighting. After several days reading that Crocea's tend to be rock dwellers I had place it about 10" below the waters surface. I have fed our tank DT's several times since. The clam is about 4-5". It is alive, but it doesn't open all the way. What did I do,or am I doing wrong? I want it to be "happy as a clam", thanks for your time.

Are there any corals near it? You may want to move it down just a bit to see if maybe it is to much light to fast. (not sure what the conditions were for the tank the clam was in before yours)

There are no corals near it. It started to stay closed while still on the sand, thats why I thought I would move it closer to the light.

It might be getting some water movement that is doesn't like, try moving it to some other location.

It is still alive and will "pull in" when a fish swims by or it "see's" me, but it is not in "full bloom" for lack of a better word. Anyone have this happen?

Maybe something is bothering it I always suspect snails look for anything on it around the mantle and on the bottom of it especially.Like little pyramid snails.

Maybe it just needs time to adjust to your tank,How did it look in the store?

It looked good in the store, I was @ the same place yesterday and all the rest looked like they were open all the way. One thing I noticed is they have pc lighting over their's. I'm not sure how long my clam was @ this store, but maybe it has to adjust more to the MH's. I have seen an astrea snail on it's shell , but no other types of snails (pest's). Thanks!

Casey is right. Something is bothering your Crocea beneath. It's not only a rock dweller it's a boring clam (no puns--just bores into the rock to attach itself). The most newbie thing to see is a crocea placed on the sand.

Update:The mantle has been looking great for the last 2 weeks, and seems very happy, butt....This morning I found our Crocea laying on the sand, again. It seems to fall down about once every other week. I have it placed in a cradle, so to speak on our rock. This time though, I picked up a piece of "something", thinking it was the shrimp that I fed our anenome last night. After a closer look I believe it to be our crocea's abyssal gland. Now what.... this is our first clam. Should I just leave it on the bottom of the substrate? It is under 400 watts of MH lighing and the tank is 32" deep (with about a 3" sand/cc substrate) Will it develope a new gland? Is there any special treatment I will need to provide? Will it die? Thanks for your help.

Its a 50/50 on if it will die,if you did tear it could develop an infection, lets hope it doesnt there really isnt much you can do for it,I would get it back up on the rocks and clear a spot so it cant fall make a trench in the rocks thats what I do and it works great you might have to move some corals and rock to make a spot

take your time and make him sit in the hole that he cant jump out of by making the trench surrounding by rocks.hths.
