That is crazy cool, What kind of clam is that? I have never seen a coloration even close to that.

Thanks,
Whiskey

by the fluting on the shell, and the teardrop colouring, i would guess that it is a T. maxima.

But I have never seen that coloration, is this just a freek morf, or something I could order from my LFS?

Thanks,
Whiskey

i have a limited amount of info about the clam distribution market. from what i have heard that a lot of these new teardrop clams are coming from Vietnam. from which Vietnam is another story apparantly.

as far as i can tell, nobody knows what causes the clams to colour the way they do. we are discussing colouration in corals in The Think Tank right now. do not know if this translates to clams, but of the several references that we have read, clams have not been mentioned. of course this does not really mean anything, but just an observation.

how rare is this clam. really hard to tell. my guess is pretty rare. will your LFS be able to get one, this is a big maybe. some LFS have big connections and can. most on the other hand will not be able to. the SW industry is a buddy buddy network. those with the highest buddy get called when cool things come in. more likely than not that buddy will snag it before the lower buddies even knew it existed. if your LFS has a high buddy, than you could be in luck.

it is also entirely possible that these are very common, and the collectors just have not been collecting them. they may have been told, we want blue only. this one could have been collected by accident. most collectors are just locals, that have no idea what is amazing and was it boring. heck, he may also be collecting some for themselves to eat for dinner that night!
