Clams & hermit crabs

Is it a mistake to put clams and hermit crabs together? And what are the other fish or inverts that must not be with clams?

I can chime in on the hermit crab. I had a scarlett and 3 clams in my nano and the hermit took care of all 3 in one week. I thought it was my water levels or the light. Removed the hermit and have had 2 clams for about 6 months now.

As for fish i would have to say anything that is a Caution adding to a reef system. I would think don't hold me to this though.

I have never had any problems with hermits and I have scarlets and blue leggs. I have 6 clams at this point one of which I have had for about 3 years and is about 10" in length and 2 that are about an inch long.

As far as fish, I believe most angels may nip at clam mantles. I have never really bothered to investigate reef safe versus clam safe.

I have a handful of blue legged hermits and they have never bothered my clams.

Bi color blennies supposedly nip at clams too, though my clam fought back.

Well I guess all of these depends on the individual personality of the hermit itself. Some will be "bad" enough to be interested on your clams some will not bother.

I've never had a problem with a hermit but this guy took out a 5 inch corsa in one night. He now lives in the sump.

I doubt any of us keep the janitors you have access to in Manilla. Over here the blue leg hermits and small astrea are popular. If you are uncertian, stick with snails

A few weeks ago I picked up a baby clam (1"), later the same night I looked and saw the empty clam shell being spun around in the claws of one of my hermits.

I will never keep any crabs on any sort in my tanks ever again (unless it's a species specific tank).
