wow. It's been my experience that clams are more hardy than fish. I would take 10 small clams in a small lagoon over a 300 gallon tank with a shoal of black tangs any day. I've had two croceas and a derasa for well over two years. I had to give away one of my croceas since I started keeping SPS and supplement dosing was getting expensive. IF you maintain good water quality, there is NO reason your clam shouldn't do well. YES, you still have to do regular water changes even though clams filter-feed nitrates and ammonia; which gives them a reputation for being good reef inhabitants. HOWEVER, they do use up a great deal of calcium and they do require water flow. I have a friend that has a ZERO-EDGE tank and has had as many as 5 clams (including the one I gave him): 1 crocea; 2 maximas and 2 squamosas. ALL of them (including the one I gave him) have died! The moral of this story? Zero-edge tanks are WORTHLESS even for display.
