Clam Trouble
Well, I bought a clam on Friday and everything was going very well until...
Let me start by saying that the rock that I put him on is pretty flat but there are a few bumps.
He attached really fast. Saturday he was attched and moved just a little, well the only thing that I can think of is that he moved so that one of the bumps on the rock would be between the shell when he closed up.
Now he has broken a piece of his shell off and will not open fully. I will try to get a pic when I get home today. Will this heal up or grow back?
If you would like to see pics of him fully open, here is the link.

Thanks for the help.

I've never had shell damage like that make a clam not open up.
Are you sure there are no fish picking at it? Is it still attached?

Yeah, it is still attached, and I have not caught a fish picking yet.
Will this shell damage heal? I dont think that there was any tissue damage, but I am not totally sure.

Umm,.. Ya, Kinda,.. well to some extent. It will keep growing from there, so after a long enough time it no longer looks weird.
I'm worried about why it's still closed up though. Have you checked at night for Pyrmid snails? Any other pests bugging it?
What is your lighing like over what size tank? Where is he in the tank?

I have looked in at night but I only waited about 1 hour after the lights went out. He broke this yesterday morning and has not been out since.
My lighting is 6x54. 4 10000K currents ran by IC660, and 2 actinics plus. Each bulb with IC individual reflectors. Light sit about 4.5 inches off water surface.
It is a 90g with 30g sump and the clam is about 8 inches under surface.
Thanks
Chris

The clam seems to be doing better now. It was open more last night and almost looked normal.
Thanks

Keep your calcium up so the shell grows.Maybe he fell and he was in shock.

He closed his shell on an uneven suface and broke it. He is starting to recover nicely. I do believe that maybe he was in shock. Both because he had only been in the tank for 32 hours then broke his shell. Maybe it was shell shock....
Thanks
Chris
