Clam Question
I've had this crocea for over 4 months. It is growing fine and has good extension when the light is on. However, at night, I see that it has these 'levels' of growth (not sure what to call them.) They look like layers of clam shell growing inside of itself. Here is a pic, not sure if this is normal or if there is a problem.

That is exactly what it is.. the clam is growing. No need to worry.

Also, here is a picture of it open. Sorry the pics aren't that great, but hopefully they work. I had to do the first under actinics right when they came on before it opened. This one is about 1 month old, but it still looks the same.

You sure it's a crocea? Based on the pronounced scutes on the shell, I'd bet it's a maxima.

Chris, I'm not sure? I was told it was a crocea when I bought it, and it looked like a crocea to me, but I'm not a clam expert at all. It's a lot bluer in real life than in the picture, but I don't think that would be the defining characteristic. Let's see who else chimes in and see what they say? Crocea or maxima? (FYI, it looks small in the pic but it's actually a little over 3")

I did a little more research and I think it might be a maxima.

They're really pretty similar in care, but the maxima will get larger. Where's everyone else? I'm sure there are other opinions!

I'm pretty sure it's a crocea; mantle shape, extension and coloration are a dead give away.
I've notice mine have larger scutes on the new growth since in captivity. I would think it's due to them not burrowing into the rocks/crevices (mine are attached on rock faces) as they do in the wild so they aren't as worn down.

Ah, hadnt really thought of that. I'll have to check that out next time I've got my hands on the two different clams.

It's pure speculation; but I suppose it's logical.
