Clam is splitting open, please help!!

Can anyone tell me why my clam is splitting open? I have the salt @1.025, tested the water and everything is fine. Only have damsels in the tank, have seen any of the fish picking on him. Is he going to die? Is there anything I can put in the water to repair him? Thank you very much for his help!!

Give a little info first. How mature is the tank? What are the levels? What kind of clam do you have? What kind of lighting do you have?

Welcome to TRT!

Sorry to say; but your light is too low. What your describing sounds to be what is known as "gaping," never a good sign. Croceas require MH (metal halide) lighting, or very dirty water with less light (gather energy from food and light), but dirty water leads to massive algal growth in our systems.

Put him as close to the lights as possible. If no improvement, might want to think of upgrading lighting or giving him to a friend with MH or trading at the LFS.

Thank you for the info. Is there anything else I can do? It is like a tear about an inch long where it opens and closes and the shell is coming apart on that side. Is that gaping?

Do you have a picture of it?

Is the mouth larger than normal?

sweet, first reply..Neb on tis thread, i would suggest getting either VHO or MH for your lighting, clams are notorious for needing highligting as well as filter foods often, do some research on this forums that i subscribe to either, nano-reef.com, they have a whole invert section, or reefcentral.com, that may or may not be the addie, so just google it.

Clams arn't notorious, they simply just need alot of light (it's not a reputation, its a fact). I agree with vince that your lighting is insufficient to sustain a maxima or crocea clam. These clams require Metal Halide lighting, some people get away with VHO but the clams need to be very close to the surface. Either take the clam back or get some MH lighting fast.
