clam closed
I have a 5" crocea. He has been in the tank for 3 months and at my LFS for 4months. He was always open and happy on the sandbed. 2 days ago he started closing up. I have a 210 with 3 400w MH 10ks. Everything is fine in the tank and the only change was I started feeding DT's to my sps. The day I fed DTs he closed. I know they like light so I moved him on some liverock, closer to the light and did a 30 gallon waterchange last night. I have not been home yet so I do not know if he is opened.
Nitrates 0ppm
Nitrites 0ppm
tank temp 78-79 F
ALK 9dkh
ca 450ppm
ORP 410

croceas are a rock boring clam and much prefer placement on the rock work, they like to be anchored firmly to a rock, and you are right about them liking light, good call on moving him up.
SPS don't eat DT's, they eat poo, your clam however will eat DT's, and if not that the copious amount of phosphate and nitrate you are adding with it. I warn you, go really easy on the phyto though; it is one of the most potent water fouling foods, if you don't believe me, just look at what it takes to grow!
How old are your lights? How much has he grown since you have had him? What fish do you have?
Thanks,
Whiskey

Casey he has a little clam on his side that was there since I got him. Snails don't bother him.
Wiskey his mantle has doubled and I change my lights every 7 months to a year. The lights are 6 months old on the ends and 2 months on the center. I also have 2 six foot actinic VHO's
Also you are right about SPS not eating DT's phytoplankton, but they do eat the zooplankton that lives off the DT's phytoplankton.

Ok cool,It is best to look at his bottom for snails at night when they are most active ,do you know what they look like? They are small.

This link describes the dip I shake my clams when they are in there to see if anything falls off or out of them also.

thanks, I will dip him tonight. Thanks for your help, I was about to give up on clams. I am thinking about getting 5-6 more soon.
Will it be ok to put him back in the sand? He looks best there and I like the look

Actually no if he wasnt getting enough light on the bottom he would open even more when on the bottom not the top,I think something is irritating him in your sand ,keep him on the rocks andcheck often for snails.
