Casey,
I checked the clams again tonight but did not find any snails. Still I rinsed them again and put them back in the tank. I have them both in tupperware bowls for right now,( I cleaned the bowls with tap water before putting them in) and I will locate them on the rock Sat morning. Is there a PETCO near you? They can order 6-lines for under 20$, and every specimen I have seen has looked healthy.
I debated getting one a while back but everyone was VERY adamant that it would compete with my mandarin and my mandarin would starve.
Actually my mandarin is eating brine shrimp now so that may not be a potential issue that it once was.
Does anyone have a take on that?
Thanks,
David

Yep you're right about the compatibility issus between the sixline and Mandarin. Just my opinion, but I will never buy another fih from Petco. I have bought 5 fish over the years from there and within 3 months each fish kicked it...Petco sux!

I guess I am lucky that my PETCO has a knowledgeable manager with tons of marine experience. So I tend to trust him. I forget not everyone is that lucky!
Casey,
Didn't there used to be a fish store near the bridge between Destin and Ft. Walton. I could swear there used to be one. Also, do you ever deal with AquaWorks in Pensacola? It is about 10 mins from WaterWorld

Casey,
A clam update. The older clam looks as if it is starting to heal, but I guess it could just be constricted a little. The other one seems to be hanging in. Right now I still have them in the bowls and they are getting enough flow while having some protection. I have not seen any more snails but will continue my vigil. If I check a few times a week randomly I should be able to police them for snails. Hopefully we can walk the road to recovery now.
PS If you were to look at that other big reef forum. There is a section for AL Reefers. There seems to be a growing presence around SE AL, Enterprise and Dothan, as well as a pretty strong club in Mobile. Maybe you can get together with some of those guys. It might make for some good trades within a 100 mile radius. Just some ideas.
Thanks for your help,
David

David,
I just picked up on the post, don't know if this will help. About 8 months ago I got my first clam, a Max. I put him on the sand bed and within about 2 months he formed a hole in the mantle that looks exactly like your picture. I ask a friend with a lot of experience and he said to move the clam closer to the light. I moved the Max about 6 in. from top of water and the hole closed up over about 2 weeks. I have 2 250W w/ 12K bulbs. I know that Max need more light than Croceas, and you have plenty of light. Thought if all else fails you could try this?
Good Luck,
Kevin

Just my 2 cents. Clams Love to be close to the light.. .If there is a rock or something obstructing the light from hitting it directly.. they tend to form the "hole" hehe

The holes seem to be closing now, as I have had them isolated for a few days. I did a little remodeling tonight and now each clam has a new perch about 8-10" directly under each halide.
This sounds elementary, but I was amazed at the difference in brilliance just from moving them up halfway. They seemed to be doing fine, even though the shells they are attached to are not so natural, they have a safety net in case they shift.
Thanks for everyone's advice,
David

Just can't win!
One hole heals and another takes its place. This one is now up closer to the intake siphon. The clam seems stable and is opening up well. What can I do? Could it be a crab?
Thanks,
David

It is not getting better
Well, I moved them closer to the light, I am still filter feeding, and they are extending well, but the holes have only gotten worse. The clams behave like everything is perfectly normal, but I know they can't go on like this. Here is a shot of the worst one. I will follow it with the other clam.
Any suggestions or just sympathy,
David
