Left compartment has a removable lid with hole in which the drain pipe is inserted. Water flows into a V-shaped perforated basket which can hold a sock of carbon or other media. (I once found a jawfish who'd been missing for 2-3 weeks alive in the basket!)
Middle compartment has two areas which originally contained bioballs (not included).
