VODKA in your Tank!
Lots of talk on www.tcmas.org about use of vodka and sugar in tanks.
Lets talk about something other than LFS.
What do you think?

Wow....I've been reading and reading and reading - I think my brain is about to start leaking out of my ears.
It seems like this idea came out of Italy and has been used mainly with SPS tanks....they also use growth hormone....
Seems kind of risky to me....but interesting nonetheless. Sounds like you really need to have an industrial strength skimmer though.

I'm wondering why this may be and what concentration of vodka. Any clues?

I was so curious about this that I googled "vodka in a marine aquarium" and found one article on the subject, by Borneman no less,
( http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/20...ture/index.php) which pretty much debunked the idea. It didn't mention anything on dosing other than the hobbyist that reported it used "increasing doses" and didn't use a control, i.e. similar tank with no vodka.
Based on this article and common sense, the only way I'd suggest using vodka in the marine aquarium hobby would be put it in your own drink while viewing.

there is a VERY long thread on RC about dosing sugar in your tank to keepnitrates down... just do a search for sugar and nitrates on RC and you will find it.....a few months ago my nitrates were off the charts... 160 ... long story...and I read this whole thread and decided to try the sugar dosing... my nitrates reached 0 after about 3 weeks and have stayed there for the last 3 months...no ill effects to my tank or corals and fish are thriving!

Jenni,
What size tank do you have and how much sugar did you use to dose it? I am trying it but I didn't want to add to much sugar without knowing... I am slowly adding 1 tablespoon at a time in a remote deep sand bed. The nitrates started pretty high 80 or so and I have been able to drop it down to about 20 but it has kinda stalled.

This isn't at all unbelievable. I suspect the sugar may jumpstart a bacteria that breaks down nitrates.
