Mantas and Turtles and Spanish Dancers, Oh My!

Just thought you'd all like to hear about my recent dive adventure. The first dive was an afternoon dive. I saw about a half dozen manta rays, even more sharks and fish, and coral spawning. The spawning was pretty cool if you didn't think about what you were swimming in; just little spurts of mucous into the sea and then drifting away.

The mantas were even more awesome. One must have been close to 14 feet across while another (about 9 feet) swam in circles near us, getting closer and closer until it was maybe 20 feet away. Unfortunately these weren't the tame mantas that you can "ride" on. Nonetheless, they were cool to see!

The second dive was a night dive. I saw a couple of large lobsters and crabs (the lobesters were a little better than a foot long and one crab had a carapace of 8 inches or so). Seeing the reflection of shrimp eyes from the dive light in little caves was neat, too.

Also on this dive I ran into something above me. I thought it was the rock overhang but then just off to my right, close enough to touch, was a 4 foot sea turtle! It's pretty awesome seeing them swimming along during the day but even more so at night!

Finally, I got to hold and play with a Spanish dancer. It wasn't too interested in swimming but did a few strokes, just enough to show its beauty.

Hope all is well with the club. I haven't seen/heard too much activity other than the zoo trip (which I would have liked to come on).

Larry

Pictures man, you need to take and post PICTURES!!! It sounds like a fantastic time.

As far as the club activity seems to slow down in the summer. Everybody has something to do outside while it is warm and it is hard to gather people together to hang out inside

So, how is the guest house comming along? The pets? Life?

Hey Larry....good to hear from you.

I must say though, that it is very cruel to tease like that and not at least share pictures....

Glad to hear you are enjoying Hawaii!!!

Sorry about no pics but I don't have a digital camera or an underwater housing.

As far as the guest room goes, after *****ing to the landlord incessantly he is finally getting it repaired. He lost his job and fell into a crippling depression a couple of months ago.

The dogs love it here! They have room to roam and all sorts of interesting things to check out. A couple of nights ago Eddie discovered a Bufo toad. This thing was HUGE-bigger than a softball! I guess they used to be pretty common but have now become rare. Hawaii is succumbing to the human steam roller and I find it very sad. The worst part is that it is almost ALL Californians-mostly rich ones-and they try to make it another California. So another state gets Californicated...

What has surprised me most here is the "western" flavor. Once you get past the California plastic and ********, the underlying "personality" of the people reminds me of that of the people of Idaho and Wyoming. It's a bit of a culture shock but not one I'm unfamiliar with (I lived in Idaho for 7 years).

There's also a very diverse and rich cultural mix here. Lots of Japanese influence with some Chinese, Korean and Philipino mixed in. Did you know that less than 6% of the population can claim 100% Hawaiian blood? I find that sad. The Polynesians that originally populated the islands have a very neat cultural history and I'd like to learn more of it. Guess I'm in the right place.

I hope everyone is doing well and not becoming too overwhelmed with the activities of life!

Larry
