ID This Goby

Hey Everyone;

I used to have a couple of these little guys but can't remember the name! They're cute little gobies, about an inch or two long and live in coral heads (obviously). Can anyone help?

It's not the best pic to ID by but I like it anyway!

Hard to tell with the top view...but it looks like either a type of clown goby or a coral croucher (or gumdrop goby)?

Lovin' your pics, Larry!

Hmmm....

Never heard of a gum drop coral cruncher goby. I was thinking it was the clown goby. I never got a good view of it; I just saw some color in a coral head and thought it would make a cool pic.

Thanks, Spanky. That helps some, but not alot.

Problem with this is that I got the picture in Hawai'i on the reef. Neither of these gobies are known to be here. Of course, it COULD be a liberated aquarium animal. If that's the case, the local authorities will be bummed!

Found the answer to the question from the lady who owns the dive outfit I went with: This is called a velvetfish. They look like a little frogfish but they are in a different family altogether.

Wink

So, when can you bag one and ship it? I hear that Jodi has a thing for little gobies.

Michael, you seem to be catching up on old posts! Chances of bagging and shipping are pretty slim; I'm not ready to go through all the hassle of getting the capture and export license. Sorry!

Loverotties, never heard of a "black clown goby". Yes, it does, indeed, look like a clown goby but they don't live here...

You hit on the head Larry, I am out of school for the summer and the big summer house project (staining the house and decks) has not started yet, so I have a little time to catch up on Reef Related Items. You seem to have ignored my questions Larry, ...
