Question

Eheim Sludge Extractor

Anyone used this before. Thinking that it could be an easy way to clean the bottom of my tank. It is pricey, but I have tried all the cheap ones and got exactly what I paid for. Thanks

That seems like a neat little tool that would be perfect for your tank setup, if it works. If my tank were setup like yours, I would go for it. Tad pricey though.

I have been meaning to ask, can you give me the website where you got your really quite 4" fans?

Question

How do you power your fans? It sounds like they have 12V 4pin hookups. That is not something I have laying aroud the house(that I know of)

It looks like a nifty device! However, if cost is a concern, what about replacement filters? How often do they need to be replaced and can they be cleaned? How hard are they to find and are they expensive?

Wiring is VERY easy... with a pair of scissors. You cut the 4 pins off and save them because you end up using them as quick disconnects out of your hood or canopy. Radio Shack or WalMart will sell the 12V AC adapters, better if you get one that is adjustable from 3V-12V so that you can control fan speed via voltage regulation...though not necessary if you only run these branded quiet fans.

All you are doing is cutting/splicing red to red and black to black. I also use a little aquarium silicon around the connections to keep anything from rusting.

REMEMBER that as you are splicing wire that they are often made of/include copper! Do not leave little copper cuttings somewhere where they will find their way into your tank.

I am not electrically inclined...took me a while to convince myself I could do this successfully, but it turned out to be simple. Let me know if you want some help...be happy to help out.

Do you have each fan on a sepate Power Supply? I am thinking of getting a higher amp power supply and driving a pair of fans on it.

Question

Also can you confirm that the fans need an AC adapter. I can't find it anywhere on the site if the fan uses AC or DC power.

Yes, you will need an adaptor. If you buy a DC fan, you are likely talking about a 120v power supply (what comes out of your wall) - not nearly as safe over water as 12V...in fact, not as DEADLY. Remember, this is a homemade wiring job, stick to the low voltage. I bought my adapter at RadioShack. You want more mV than you will need for the 2 fans. I think the quiet fans I sent you on the thread are 300mV. So, with my 1500mV adapter from radio shack, I run two Vantec 120mm and 2 Vantec 80mm. Now that I have both, I should have stuck with all 120mm (4.2").
