Correspondence with Larry

For those of you who know/remember Larry from before he moved out to the middle of the ocean I thought I would post a PM I shared with him. Sorry but this post will not mean much to those of you who do not know larry.

Re: R U still around here?
Hi Michael;

Thanks for the concern! Life is different. I discovered that Sally is not the person I thought she was and have ended that relationship. Life, however, goes on and the whole concept of being single is just beginning to dawn on me!

I haven't been doing much, really, for the last couple of months other than a few dives and regular day-to-day stuff like yard work, housework and regular work.

I got one of the cheap, disposable cameras and took it diving but the pics came out pretty lousy so I didn't send them to you. I think for Christmas Day I'm going to go diving but can't afford a camera so there won't be any pics from there, either.

I DID see an extremely rare fish a few weeks ago on a dive. It was a male Hawaiian Lyre-tail Anthias at 112 feet. It was the most colorful fish I've ever seen and had about 6 or 7 females around it (which are brown and pretty plain). I also saw some white "whiskers" sticking out from an overhang in the same area and saw the biggest coral banded shrimp ever! It must have been 8 inches or more and the tail was about 3/4 the size of my little finger thick!

Most of the coral here is SPS; what isn't is black coral, which is similar to gorgonians but has a rigid "skeleton" and is quite rare because the skeleton makes great jewelry and fetches a premium price.

Other abundant critters are brittle stars, crabs of all sorts, lobsters (aka "bugs" in the local dialect), butterfly fish, parrot fish, wrasses, various tangs and triggerfish, and turtles. I've swam with more turtles than I care to count!

Overall, I'm doing fairly well. I haven't popped in much on the board 'cuz there doesn't seem to be much activity. Anyways, hope this finds you and Nicole well and I wish you a happy holiday season.

Larry

Thanks for sharing this, Michael...

Wow, Larry! I can't tell you how jealous I am (especially with all the snow we have and the wind chill below zero this morning)....I am glad to hear that things are going well, although I am sorry to hear that things didn't work out with Sally. I am sure some beautiful Hawaiian woman will snap you up before to long...

Have a great holiday season...I'd send you some snow, if I could.

J.

Thanks for the offer, Jodi, but I'll pass on the snow. I have NOT forgotten Minnesota winters! On the topic of weather, a cold front passed through here yesterday so it only got into the upper 70's at the beaches and about 70 or so where I live.

As always, the previous invitation I've made to members stands; I have a spare bedroom that is detached from the main house.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I found an outfit that is going to Lana'i on Christmas day so I'll be about 80 feet underwater as you folks are cutting into your Christmas dinner. Lana'i is about 9 miles off the coast of Maui and is part of Maui county. That's where I saw the Hawaiian Lyre-tailed wrasse. Dolphins purportedly hang out there so I'm crossing my fingers for that adventure AND the whales have returned from Alaska to have their babies. If I don't see one up close and personal IN the water, I'm almost assured to see one from the boat and to HEAR them singing in the water.

Hope everyone is healthy and happy. Mele Kalikimaka!

Larry
