x10 lighting/wavemaker control?

I was curious if anyone has a simple, basic, and FREE program that would use a x10 setup and control my lights and powerheads.

I know there seem to be a lot of reefers in the programming/IT field so I was hoping someone had put something like this togther...

Next tank will be controlled by x-10's and a microprocessor - right now just timers for everything

i have not seen any free ones, but have seen many that were significantly below $100, i have seen a few for as little as $15. i have been looking under software for that other OS, but i do not think it would much different for the other OS's.

those prices are not that bad considering a standard X-10 module will cost at least $10.

ReefCon LT uses X10 and it is free, they also have a pro version with many more features for only $20.00 (I think)

Here is the URL:

You can get the x10 software at the x10 site for free.

The new software that uses the USB controller you have to pay for.

FYI -- If you've used X10 before, you know that appliance modules, as opposed to lamp modules, are your only option for controlling pumps, lights, etc. These modules are built around a relay that produces a fairly loud click when they turn on/off, and this can be pretty annoying, especially when used for wavemakers. (Lamp modules, althought silent, supposedly will not work for anything other than incandescent loads.)

I recently discovered an X10 DIY site that gives details on how to convert an X10 lamp module into a silent appliance module (capable of controlling powerheads, ballasts, etc.) by replacing some internal circuitry with a solid-state relay. I tested it and it works great! The link is here. (You'll have to scroll down.) The lamp module is about $12.30 (at HomeTech) and the SS relay is about $9.50 (at Mouser). A $.05 22uF capacitor is also needed.

There were other how-to methods for making silent appliance modules at the DIY site's main page, but the one I used seemed like the easiest, best way to get it done (but not necessarily the cheapest).

(Note: the disclaimers offered by the authors of the modification instructions also apply here -- opening an X10 module voids its warranty, hazardous voltages and the risk of fire exist, etc. This modification should only be attempted by someone having soldering/de-soldering experience and the proper equipment.)

Check out my x10 page -- www.bytality.com/x10/ for the free apps I found & use. I actually run it as a winXP service (which is a optional but little more tricky to setup) but just using the two apps is really straightforward.

I use a scheduling agent app and MSCM17A to send the x10 signals to my firecracker (CM17a). Checkout www.sourcefourge.com and search for x10 if you need software for other x10 units.

I highly recommend disabling local-current sensing since it doesn't like to play nicely with reef lighting since it "leaks" just a little current all the time. It's what allows you to turn on a module automatically when the appliance is turned on because the module senses the current draw and clicks on. It's a 30 second mod to snip a diode. You can always solder it back if you decide you need it for something else (not likely).
