working with silicone sealant

Hey - is there any way to keep the sealant from hardening over time? I've tried the cap, a nail/screw, ziploc bags, etc. Everything seems to still harden fairly quick. I've got to do some work and know it won't use a full tube...

i have had pretty good luck using the small hand tubes. these plastic tubes seem to work well if caped when done. i still have one i use that i bought and used first about a year ago. i also make sure not to let any air backwash into the tube after i am done squeezing.

i still get the very tip cured. i just push it into the tube using a straightened coat hanger. this seems to work well. i do not know how many "plugs" i have in the tube, but they do not seem to get in the way very often.
