Workhorse 7 and halides
I happened to get 2 workhorse 7 ballasts. Will they be able to run a 175w MH mogul bulb? Or are they only ok for other applications such as vho, ho or pc.

Thanks Tims, I figured the halides were out.But needed some reasurance. I have had them on 2 100w vho bulbs and they were ok. I was looking for a cheap way into halides for my new frag tank but I guess i will go a different direction.

tom, check the local home centers, sometimes you can fine MH fixtures that you can use. most if not all the bulbs are way too small for us to use thought..( under 5000K)

Auto, if you want to go the least expensive route, you can buy, on the Net or at an electrical supply house, bare magnetic ballasts. They have to be put in a metal can of some sort, my first was a cracker tin, and it has been in operation for nearly a year now, but I've moved up in the world now, I went to the Army surplus and got a 7.62mm ammo can for my 175W halide, and it works great. With a reflector and bulb, you can get by for about $120. Here's my setups:

I like the ammo box setup. Really creative. The reason I was posting,is I got 2 workhorse 7 ballasts from a member of the Atlanta reef club. I also have vho endcaps but was looking for some 24 inch vho buls and couldn't find any yesterday in my travels. I have 2 mogul sockets and spider reflectors extra also. My dilema was going halide with new ballasts or just buying bulbs for the VHO and going that route for a while. I built a 35 gallon prop tank and need to get something over it within the next week or so. I still need to find some stain to match the doors I already had then move it upstairs and set it up.

tom look at some of the gel stains, they can be a bit darker then most of the liquid stains. that almost looks like a antique maple stain on the doors.
i like working withhte gel stains, i can make wood a lot richer looking..

Thanks Guys I've got a gel stain I'm using. It's the closest I could get. I just want to get it setup. Tonight I will give it one more coat and whatever happens, will be it.
So far the tank i built has held water. Just hope it continues.
