Same here, on the stand and outside of the hood. If you go this route, make sure that whatever poly you use is oil based,
not water based -- this will turn white and flake off after a few years.
On the inside of my hoods I use a white oil based enamel (used for painting metal) it takes around 3 coats til the wood stops soaking it up and becomes impenetrable to water.
