Wood Canopy quetion

I am building a light canopy and used pine for the fixture. I want to protect the wood for as long as possible. Is there any sort of treatment I can put on the wood for protection? I alos plan to paint as well. Thanks for any help.

I used Minwax Polyurethane when I did mine. A few coats of that will make it very water resistant.

Same here, on the stand and outside of the hood. If you go this route, make sure that whatever poly you use is oil based, not water based -- this will turn white and flake off after a few years.

On the inside of my hoods I use a white oil based enamel (used for painting metal) it takes around 3 coats til the wood stops soaking it up and becomes impenetrable to water.
